Baby With Two Horns

Last week, sensational news of a two-horned baby delivered in Osun State, was reported by the Nigerian Tribune. Many tongues are still wagging about the "strange" baby, with varied speculations about the truth.

From the pictures shown, the baby really does not have any horn, rather the eyes look "very swollen" and malformed. Truth is the "two horned" baby actually had a medical condition known as Anencephaly.

Anencephaly is a serious birth defect which causes a baby to be born with a grossly malformed brain and cranial vault. The cerebrum and cerebellum are reduced or absent, but the hindbrain is present.

Pregnant mothers can protect their babies from having anencephaly with simple measures such as: taking adequate folic acid, avoiding hot environments such as hot tubs, and in diabetic mothers, maintaining a strict control of blood sugar levels.

Regular antenatal visits are also mandatory to having a healthy baby and safe delivery. During antenatal visits, routine investigations can pick up abnormalities in the foetus and problems which may impede safe delivery. Pregnant mothers also get necessary supplements and medications during visits.
