An encephalocele is a protrusion of the brain and/or meninges through a defect in the skull (cranium bifidum) that is "closed" or covered with skin. Encephalocele is one of the three most common neural tube defects (NTDs). The other main types of NTDs are anencephaly and myelomeningocele.

Encephaloceles usually occur in the midline and protrude anywhere along a line from the occiput to the nasal passages but can be present asymmetrically in the frontal or parietal regions.

The treatment for an encephalocele is surgery to remove the herniated sac and repair the opening in the skull.
