Nigerian nurse kills baby with a hot bath

Oluyemisi Adebayo, 54, a licensed practical nurse, working in Queens, NY had been employed to care for Naomi Mondesire, a 22 month old girl who was born prematurely and needed a tracheotomy tube to breath in her parent's home when the sad incident occurred. Mrs Adebayo bathed Naomi with water so hot that it peeled her skin off.
The toddler was rushed to Nassau County Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns on more than 50% of her body, according to officials. Because of the child’s existing poor health, she was unable to fight off pneumonia and a blood infection that the medical examiner later determined was caused by the burns. She died Monday.

Naomi’s grandmother, Gardite Mondesire said she was studying at a nearby library when a tenant in the building called her with the horrific news.

"When I got home my tenant was running around picking up pieces of skin,” a shocked Mondesire said. “It was all over the floor. It was all over the tub, all over the floor.”

Mondesire called Adebayo and asked her what happened.

“She said ‘It’s bad. I did something bad. The baby got burned,’” Mondesire said. “But she said she didn’t know how.”

Adebayo told cops she had placed her hand in the water before putting the child into the bath and only realized the dangerous temperature when she took the toddler out of the water and saw the skin on the infant’s legs peeling off, according to the Queens DA’s office.

From police reports, the injury was due to the baby being submerged for 30 seconds in very hot water (over 130 degrees) and was very likely intentional.

On Wednesday, she was arrested at the airport while trying to board a flight to Nigeria and has been charged with murder. Her motive, still undetermined.
