Update on the pregnant 10 year old from Paraguay

Remember the 10 year old girl who was raped by her step-father and denied an abortion because of the stringent abortion laws in Paraguay; well the stepfather has been caught and was arrested on Saturday.

Benitez Gilberto Zarate, 42, who fled in the wake of the accusation against him denied raping the girl and is demanding a DNA test to back his claim. The girl's mother has also been arrested and charged with breaching her duty of care amongst other charges.

Meanwhile, the government is  maintaining its stand on not allowing the abortion despite pleas from the girl's family and the international community.

The Paraguayan Ministry of Health said there's no indication that the health of the girl is at risk but
Amnesty International insists that pregnancy poses health risks to young girls whose bodies aren't fully developed and she should be allowed to have an abortion based on this.

"The physical and psychological impact of forcing this young girl to continue with an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to torture," Amnesty International official Guadalupe Marengo said this week. "The Paraguayan authorities cannot sit idly by while this young rape survivor is forced to endure more agony and torment."

At the moment, the Paraguayan government is in charge of her antenatal care till delivery.

It is true that pregnancy in young girls is associated with a number of complications and I think this will be a tough case for Pro-life supporters based on the circumstances: A 10 year old forced to deliver the baby of a man who she must have considered a father, but raped her in the end; I can't even comprehend the gravity of the psychological torture especially at such a tender age.

Another argument is, if "all lives are precious," why should this one be different regardless of the circumstance.

I'd love to hear your opinion on this case in the comments section.
