Bird flu in Nigeria

You've probably heard of a recent bird flu (H5N1 strain) outbreak in Nigeria, affecting 11 states: Kano had 136,905 infected birds and 17,987 deaths; Lagos had 38,845 cases and 4,732 deaths.

The current outbreak of bird flu is not limited to Nigeria, as several other countries including the United States, Egypt and Ghana are also battling  the scourge.
Although no human case has been reported in Nigeria, there remains a risk of transmission to humans in close contact with poultry.

To prevent being infected, you are advised to thoroughly cook your poultry till the juice runs clear with no visible pink meat. Also eggs should be cooked until the yolk is no longer runny.

Health care workers are advised to consider the possibility of bird flu infection in people who are showing signs of respiratory illness and have had exposure to birds or contaminated environments.

Meanwhile the Nigerian Government has approved 145 million Naira ($767,400, 676,000 euros) to compensate farmers by the outbreak.
