Jerome Weitz, 63, is believed to have taken over cannabis trafficking duties for his incarcerated son, Joshua Weitz, who runs a medical marijuana growing facility in California, according to a law enforcement source.
The older Weitz, head of the Mission Dental Health practice, was raking in about $100,000 a month after picking up his son's slack, authorities said.
Weitz, in a promotional video on his practice's website, warns patients that regular marijuana smoking could be "doing damage to the tissues that support their teeth," citing the results of a study.
"That's why at Mission Dental Health, we are encouraging cannabis users and smokers, and those who do it together, to see the dentist more often because they're more likely to have improved periodontal health if they do," he says.
Signing off, he adds a corny catchphrase: "At Mission Dental Health, your smile is our mission."
Dr. Wietz's attorney, Neal Wiesner, said that his client has been in practice for 33 years and has lived in the same home for 25, and alluded to the fact that the dentist was about to have a grandchild.
"He's done charitable work in the past as a dentist. This is a distinguished member of the San Francisco community," Wiesner added. "This is a person who has done good for others during his lifetime."
Assistant District Attorney Daniel Hughes said the defendant's pedigree was irrelevant. "I don't think it's appropriate to discuss his educational and professional background," Hughes said.
