Authorities of the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) Teaching Hospital (UPTH) may have dismissed the two female nurses who were on duty at the emergency unit on August 30th this year when late Miss Kelechi Ndulagwu Precious, a student of the university died due to alleged negligence.
Their dismissal followed recommendations by a panel set up by the hospital management to investigate the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident. It would be recalled that the news of the demise caused serious crisis in Rivers State where irate students barricaded entrances of the health facility and chased away doctors and nurses.
The panel, headed by a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, John Ikimalo, recommended the sack of the two female nurses who denied the late undergraduate of Theatre and Film Studies a bed space. The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UPTH, Prof. Aaron Ojule while briefing journalists yesterday in Port Harcourt, said the critical nature of the matter compelled management to probe the matter.
Ojule explained that the panel report, which came out Tuesday, condemned the acts of laxity and indiscipline and recommended the sack of the two nurses(names withheld). According to the CMD: “The two staff who flouted established rules and protocol that are applicable in the hospital have been issued queries and based on their unsatisfactory responses, the panel has recommended for their sack.
“Presently we have placed them on three-month suspension without pay while waiting for the approval of the Ministry of Health. What happened was an act of laxity and indiscipline on the part of the affected staff that was why they have to go.”
