Alariwo of Africa Seeks N26M Funding for Varicocele Surgery (R-18)

It is no longer news that ace musician, Rotimi Martins popularly known as Alariwo of Africa is currently suffering from varicocoeles and requires surgical management.

According to reports, the singer may soon appear on the popular television game show ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ to solicit for funds to pay for his surgery.

Alariwo is believed to need about $130,000 which is about N26million for his treatment.

So what are variocoeles?

A varicocele is the result of the veins in your scrotum (the pouch of skin that holds your testicles) becoming enlarged because of the accumulation of blood in them. These veins are also called the pampiniform plexus.

A varicocele can feel like you're holding "a bag of worms" and most of the time, they cause no problems. Occasionally, they can cause pain, infertility, or shrinking of a testicle.

How do they happen?

Varicoceles may result from valves in the veins working poorly (or not being present at all). With a poorly functioning valve, blood flow can become sluggish, thus allowing blood to accumulate in the veins. This makes the veins enlarge/swell up to form a varicocoele.

 Treatment

A varicocoele can be corrected either by embolization of the veins (to stop blood flow) or surgically by tying the abnormal veins permanently to prevent continued abnormal blood flow.

From my digging, both the embolization and surgery are done on an out-patient basis and the stitches  are removed within 48hours.

Also, the surgery could cost between $15,000-$20,000 (N4.2m - N5.6m); so I can't help but wonder why Alariwo's surgery is  pegged at $130,000 or N26m. It should not be that high, even when you add air tickets and all.

Anyway, I'm just saying my piece and I wish him a speedy recovery.
