The virus (notorious for causing microcephaly) has now been linked to a spike in Guillain-Barré syndrome in seven countries with a concurrent outbreak of Zika virus.
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare condition in which a person’s immune system attacks their peripheral nerves and can result in muscle weakness and loss of sensation in the legs and/or arms.

Although most people recover fully from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, some continue to experience weakness post-recovery.
With the virus spreading at an alarming rate worldwide-- from the Americas to as far as Asia and Europe, several countries have been raising funds to combat the disease and fund research. On Monday, President Barack Obama requested $1.8 billion in emergency funds to help combat Zika virus.
Meanwhile, it is most probable that the virus is already in Nigeria, but there has been no reported spike in cases of microcephaly.
