Following the extremely saddening death of six senior medical doctors in a fatal motor accident along Kaduna road while on their way to attend the 56th Annual Conference and General Delegates Meeting of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in Sokoto, the Minister of Health has released a statement through the Ministry's Director of Media and Public Relations, Boade Akinola.
According to the statement, "Our prayers is that almighty God in his infinite mercy will give the family, friends and the entire members of NMA the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. To the survivors, our prayers is that they will recover soon and get integrated into their normal daily activities."
The National Officers’ Committee, NOC, of the NMA also announced the names of the six deceased doctors to include: Dr. Alex Akinyele, who was the Secretary NMA Ekiti, Federal Teaching Hospital, FTH, Ido Ekiti; Dr. Tunde Aladesanmi, General Surgeon, FTH, Ido Ekiti; Dr. O.J. Taiwo, Anatomic Pathologist, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti.
Others are Dr. Ogunseye J.B who was the NAGGMDP National Secretary, Hospital Management Board, HMB, Ekiti; Dr. Olajide .O, EKSUTH President of the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD; Dr. Atolani Adeniyi, Secretary NAGGMDP, Ekiti State. Also killed in the road mishap was the NMA Ekiti Driver, whose name was given as Mr. Ajibola.
The NMA President, Dr. Kayode Obembe and its Secretary General, Dr. Adewunmi Alayaki, have declared one week of mourning for our fallen colleagues and directed all doctors to show solidarity by wearing a Black band on the left arm over white overall.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Head of Operations, Deputy Corps Commander Salisu Galadunci, on Tuesday attributed the accident that claimed the lives of six Ekiti State medical doctors to speeding. The accident occurred on Sunday at Doka, along Abuja –Kaduna road.
“Twelve medical doctors and a driver were in an 18-seater bus travelling to Sokoto for Nigeria Medical Association (NMA)’s annual conference and had a tyre burst due to over speeding,” Mr. Galadunci said.
“The vehicle overturned with the occupants and six of the doctors died along with the driver while six others survived with various degrees of injuries.
“Bodies of the victim were evacuated to St. Gerard Hospital for depositing and medical attention.”
One of the survivors, the Ekiti state NMA’s branch Chairman, John Akinbote, however blamed the death of the doctors on lack of immediate medical attention.
He said: “Those that died would have survived if we got good medical attention from the point of the accident to the Doka General Hospital in Kaduna.
“It became even worst, when we got to Doka Hospital and there was no single doctor to attend to us and the only nurse on duty had no first aid facilities to administer treatment.
“I am sure, if FRSC personnel that took us to Doka Hospital and the nurse on duty had medical facilities to give first aid treatment, our doctors and driver wouldn’t have died.”
Another survivor, Stephen Ayosanmi, said the driver had slammed the brakes when the tyre blew out causing the bus to somersault.
May the souls of the departed Rest in Perfect Peace!!!
