Nigerian doctor banned from practising medicine in UK

A Nigerian gynaecologist in the UK has been ordered to repay £75,620.73 within the next six months or go to prison, after being accused of fraud.

The accused, Dr Anthony Madu, 45, is reported to have been carrying out well-paid jobs in secret while on paid sick leave from another hospital.

According to Daily Mail, the accused is reported to have been given an Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar post at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in August 2009 but was suspended and placed on extended leave two months later over the allegations that he had falsified his training record as well as his unsavoury conduct towards other staff members.

Dr Madu reportedly began submitting sick notes in January 2010 on three different occasions, complaining that he could not work due to the level of stress he was facing at the hospital.

Unknown to the staff of the hospital where Madu worked, he went on to earn huge sums as a locum at four other hospitals in Manchester, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Prosecutor, Christian Jowett, revealed to Cardiff Crown Court that accused also transferred £95,000 to a bank account in Nigeria.

The presiding Judge, David Wynn Morgan, disclosed that Madu will never be able to practise medicine in the UK again following his fraudulent actions.
