A premature neonate may receive fluids and nutrition through an intravenous (IV line) if extremely premature or has breathing difficulties. Alternatively, they may receive milk through a small tube that is passed through the nose (nasogastric tube) or mouth (orogastric tube) into the stomach.
This is done because a premature neonate is not mature enough to co-ordinate sucking, swallowing and breathing until about 32-34 weeks.
