Colonic polyps are slow-growing overgrowths of the colonic mucosa that carry a small risk (<1%) of becoming malignant. Therefore, they are removed whenever detected.
The best test test for detecting a colonic polyp is a colonoscopy; which is also useful in obtaining biopsies, and/or performing endoscopic resection.
Although flexible sigmoidoscopy and stool tests for occult blood have been the mainstays of screening to prevent colon cancer, some clinicians now favor colonoscopy as a primary screening tool.
📚📚Intestinal polyposis syndromes can be divided, based on histology, into the broad categories of:
👉🏽Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
👉🏽Hamartomatous polyposis syndromes
👉🏽and other rare polyposis syndromes, such as hereditary-mixed polyposis syndrome (HMPS).
