Pneumonia

📚Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung parenchyma which causes the the alveoli to fill with fluid or pus, making it difficult to breathe (dyspnea).

📚One of the symptoms in Pneumonia is cough productive of sputum.

🔆⚠️Most times, the sputum colour could indicate the infective organism. E.g Streptococcus pneumoniae gives rust-colored sputum;
Pseudomonas, Haemophilus, and pneumococcal species give green sputum);
Klebsiella species pneumonia (Red currant-jelly sputum) and
anaerobic infections produce foul-smelling or bad-tasting sputum.

📚On examination, one or more of the following may be found:
👉🏼Hyperthermia (fever, typically >38°C) or hypothermia (< 35°C)
👉🏼Tachypnea (>18 respirations/min)
👉🏼Use of accessory respiratory muscles
Tachycardia (>100 bpm) or bradycardia (< 60 bpm)
👉🏼Decreased intensity of breath sounds
👉🏼Dullness to percussion
👉🏼Lymphadenopathy
👉🏼Pleural friction rub

🔬Some investigations include: CBC, ABG, E/U/Cr, CXR. Blood cultures should be obtained before the administration of antibiotics.
