Boxing superstar Amir Khan to sponsor treatment for boy with retinoblastoma

Boxing superstar Amir Khan has come to the rescue and is offering to pay for life-saving treatment for a seven-year-old Pakistani boy whose life is in danger from an enormous tumor suspected to be Retinoblastoma.

Doctors in his own country said his disease was in stage four, and that he had just weeks to live without treatment.

Retinoblastoma is a type of eye cancer that affects the retina. It may affect one or both eyes.

A large number of patients with retinoblastoma (95%) have no previous family history, including those who have the bilateral hereditary form of the disease.

Leukocoria (white pupillary reflex or cat's eye reflex) is the most common presenting sign in Rb.

Treatment depends on the patient and how large the tumor is. Surgical modalities include enucleation, cryotherapy, photocoagulation and exenteration.
Medical modalities include:
External beam radiation therapy, Use of Radioactive isotope plaques and Chemotherapy.
