Strange but true- On Sunday, a human heart intended for transplant was treated just like any other piece of baggage, when it was forgotten and not transferred from the cargo hold on a Dallas-bound flight from Seattle.
The heart was sent from California and was "intended to stay in Seattle for delivery to a local hospital" but was mistakenly kept on the connecting flight to Dallas.
When the error was discovered, the plane had to turn around and return to Seattle to deliver the organ. However, no word was said if the heart was still viable for transplant, keeping in view that hearts are only viable for transplant for only a few hours after being harvested.
After correcting the error, part of the statement from Southwest Airlines said, "Nothing is more important to us than the Safety of our Customers and the safe delivery of the precious cargo we transport every day."
