Conjoined Twins In Katsina Die

A family has been left heartbroken following the death of a set of conjoined twins recently in Katsina state.

The twin babies were conjoined at the stomach, a predicament which saw the family struggle and seek financial assistance from the public for a surgery to separate them, after their delivery.

Reports have it that the babies passed away by 2.00pm on Friday.

Conjoined twins are produced when the inner cell mass derived from a single zygote divides 12 days or more after fertilization. The delivered fetuses are physically joined at some point as a result.
.
About 40% of conjoined twins are not alive when they are born and about 35% die within a day after they are born because their organs cannot support them. In some cases, conjoined twins can be surgically separated. However, the success of surgery depends on where the twins are joined and how many and which organs are shared, as well as the experience and skill of the surgical team.
.
Of all types of conjoined twins, omphalopagus twins are the most favorable candidates for elective surgery because of good survival rates. In omphalopagus twins, the two bodies are fused at the lower abdomen. The heart is never involved but they often share a liver, digestive system, diaphragm and other organs.
