Hymenoplasty, also known as hymenorrhaphy, is the cosmetic repair, restoration, or construction of a woman’s hymen. In essence, it makes a woman a "virgin" again.
Although many people are aware that the hymen may be torn or damaged by sex, it is important to know that strenuous athletics, horseback or bicycle riding, simple gynecological examination with a speculum or gloved finger insertion or masturbation and even placing a tampon into the vagina may rupture the hymen. In some cases, a hymen may not be present at all, as approximately 1 in 1,000 women are born without one.
Women who opt for hymenoplasty often do so for various reasons including reclaiming their virginity after a rape attack, fixing a structural hymen anomaly (e.g imperforate hymen) or their cultural/religious beliefs.
