The doctor was Dr. Allan Zarkin and the patient was Dr. Gedz, a dentist.
.
On Sept. 8, 2000 the day after undergoing a Caesarean section that delivered a healthy girl, Dr. Gedz held a mirror up to her stomach in a recovery room and discovered that Dr. Zarkin had carved his initials, A. Z., into her abdomen.
.
In court papers, Dr. Gedz and Dr. Ghalili, an oral surgeon, said that the carving had deprived Dr. Ghalili of intimacy with his wife. Dr. Gedz said she was embarrassed to undress in front of her husband because another man's initials were carved into her stomach.
.
In his defence, Dr. Zarkin's lawyer said he was suffering from Pick's disease, a frontal lobe dementia similar to Alzheimer's disease and his actions were caused by medical incapacity/cerebral dysfunction and not the result of any negligent, willful or intentional conduct.'
