🏨Hyperemesis gravidarum is uncontrollable vomiting during pregnancy that results in dehydration, weight loss, and ketosis.
ℹ️It is thought to be caused by high levels of circulating HCG. This is supported by the fact that it's more common in multiple pregnancies and also tends to affect women during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy commonly.
🏩The severity can be determined by measuring serum electrolytes, urine ketones, BUN, creatinine, and body weight.
Hospital treatment may include some or all of the following:
1️⃣Temporary suspension of oral intake, followed by a gradual resumption
2️⃣Intravenous fluids (IV) – to restore hydration, electrolytes, vitamins, and nutrients
3️⃣Tube feeding
4️⃣Medications – metoclopramide, antihistamines, and antireflux medications.
