Can you guess the diagnosis?

The answer is Vibrio vulnificus

V vulnificus infects the body in 2 ways, either by exposure to contaminated seafood, such as raw oysters, or through an open wound exposed to contaminated seawater.

Vibrio vulnificus can cause wound infections and/or primary septicemia.

One factor that makes V. vulnificus dangerous is its ability to produce cytotoxins and proteases. In people with chronic liver disorders, V. vulnificus can cause necrotising fasciitis after infecting a wound.

Treatment: Aggressive debridement to remove necrotic tissue, Antibiotics (doxycycline).

Limb amputation is sometimes necessary to remove dead or infected tissue. About 1 in 7 people with a Vibrio vulnificus wound infection die.
